EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
This is a list of all the extracurricular activities that I have participated in and I believe have played an essential role in my career.
CAN-CWIC 2019
In 2019, I was privileged to attend CAN-CWIC, in Toronto, Ottawa, along with a few other members of Ada's team. At CAN-CWIC I not only was I able to meet and network with various people in computer science and technology-related degrees and job. I was also able to attend numerous seminars where I learned a lot and developed a passion for more topics. We also had many speakers talk to us about common issues they face in their workplaces and how to tackle them. Overall this conference was very enlightening and I learned a lot from attending it.
Saint Joseph's College Residence Volleyball
Balling sports is my favorite way to relax, which is why I joined Saint Joseph's College Residence Volleyball team. Every Thursday evening we meet for about 1 - 2 hours and play against an equivalent team. Participating in volleyball has really improved my ability to work in a team and has helped me learn to prioritize and manage my time wisely.
HACKED BETA 2019
HackED Beta 2019 was another awesome hackathon that I attended. My teammates and I went in with a much higher expectation for our project that we achieved. Initially, we had wanted to build a robotic car that could move around and pick garbage up using human hand control signals. I believe we had a very good starting point and Idea but we were not able to complete the project during the 24-hours. We started off the project using a raspberry pi but we ended up completing the project using an Arduino instead. We ended up presenting a car that could move forward and backward using a remote control instead of hand signals. Although, we were not really satisfied without project we learned a lot of lessons such as whenever you are going for a hackathon make use to test all your hardware severally to make sure they are working properly and make sure you have all your hardware at least a week prior to the event.
LEVEL-UP Hackathon
Level-Up hackathon was one of the most interesting hackathons I had ever experienced mostly because the structure was very different from a regular hackathon. I liked the structure of this hackathon because the organizer created teams for every member of the hackathon ensuring that all participants were working in a group with people that they were not familiar with. I got to meet new people and collaborate with them. I was just starting my the first semester of my third year and I assigned to a group with upper-year students who I learned a lot from I learned things like working with API's, using JavaScript libraries, using Django and so much more like what to expect from my upper-year classes. My team and I started building a web application called 'Lyric Boa', this application used music API's to get the statistic of the most used words by various popular artists and then produce charts showing the top ten words used by each artist. The web application user would have to search up the name of the artist he/she is interested in and pick between bubble chart, bar chart or pie chart. After the user picks his choices the top ten words used are represented in one of the three forms including the statistics for all other words that are not top ten and omitting prepositions and other regularly used words. I worked mostly on the Frontend because I was more familiar with frontend frameworks. We ended up with and application that had a working frontend and backend but we didn't have enough to establish a combine both parts.
ADA'S TEAM
Ada's Team is a group that supports diversity in computing, games, and technology at the University of Alberta. As an active member of Ada's team, I attend and volunteer at most of the club's events. In the past few years, I have volunteered at Ada's teams University club fairs and other events off-campus such as the YEGTech Open House. Being in a part of Ada's team has helped me to meet more women in computer science and computer engineering and to learn and grow with them.
HACKED BETA 2017
This first hackathon I ever attended and it was organized by Startup Edmonton. I found this experience very interesting because it was a learning experience as I was working with java for the very first time and I had the opportunity to meet new people. This event also helped me improve my teamwork skills. My group and I created an android tic-tac-toe game and we ended up winning a prize for the best game category project.
GLOBAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM
This was a summer program that I attended in South Africa. This program was aimed at developing teenagers' leadership skills. It was the compressed version of the two-year program offered at the African Leadership Academy. We were taught various things like problem-finding and brainstorming, identifying needs from wants and many other qualities that good leaders should have to develop the world. We also had the opportunity to meet with a lot of great speakers from all over the world. We engaged in community service to help the people in the South African villages. And to complete the program we were divided into groups of four or three to identify a specific problem that we saw in South Africa and come up with an efficient solution. At the end of the program, we had to present our solution to the problem that we identified and justify why our solution was the best.
Nigerian and West African Mathematics Competitions
Throughout my middle school and high school, I have been chosen several times to represent my school in various mathematics competitions and I believe this has improved my cognitive and problem solving skills.
